The Car Loan Scheme

Many of us will have borrowed things from friends or family, but not many of us will have borrowed a classic car, from a stranger, for a whole year.

Peter Garrett, rather than watching his beautiful Ford Model A Phaeton languish from infrequent use, wanted to offer a newcomer to the classics scene the chance to take it to the road and enjoy it. With like-minded Bob Wilkinson, organiser of ‘Classics Virgin’ days at the British Motor Museum – for newcomers to the classics scene – the Car Loan Project, a pioneering idea to encourage the next generation of enthusiasts into the classic vehicle community was born. Bob Wilkinson explained: “It’s one of my missions to introduce the next generation into the classic motoring movement, and I hope this is the first project of many. Buying a classic car can be an expensive venture, but this gives budding enthusiasts the chance to find out what life is like as a classics owner and hopefully they too will be hooked by the wonderful opportunities and experiences it opens up – it’s like becoming a part of one big family.”

The Vauxhall Victor Owners Club owns and lovingly cares for a Vauxhall Victor, ‘Joanna’, bought new in 1960 by Ms Valerie Evans, and generously donated to the Club by her in 1994. The Club is delighted to join the Car Loan Project and is asking for interested borrowers to contact us. You should be a newcomer to the classic car scene; for insurance purposes, over the age of 25, and using the car for social, domestic and pleasure only (not commuting); be able to store the loan car under cover or preferably in a garage; be prepared to send frequent updates and photos of days out with the car, family, and friends. You will be responsible for routine servicing, MoT should it become due during the loan period, and insurance. You must be able to attend the Gaydon Motor Museum in Warwickshire on 7th April 2018, where you can have a familiarisation session with the car before we hand it over in front of the classic car press. You must also be able to attend the National Vauxhall Rally at Market Harborough (in ‘Joanna’ of course!) on 14th and 15th July 2018. We are expecting a significant number of applications, so please put forward (briefly!) something about yourself and why we should loan our car to you for a year.
