I am coding a game for a game company using Java. I am having trouble getting a child object to access the members of its parent object.
For example, the object I need to access is called “Word” and it has the data members “the word” and “the definition”. Word can have up to 5 objects added to it, so I need to have an array of Word objects.
I have a Word class that holds a list of children, and a method in the class that instantiates the children of Word based off of a string. This works fine for a single word. But if I want to instantiate the entire wordList, I get a NullPointerException on the word.insert(index, Word).
My question is two-fold:

how do I access the word.insert(index, Word) method from a child object?
is there a more proper way to approach this type of task? Does Java make it hard to handle access to the parent object?
