Fostering interest in math and science in middle school boys through the provision of challenging math and science curriculum
Objective:
To foster interest in math and science among boys in sixth to eighth grade by providing them with challenging math and science content and pedagogy to be used in a tutorial setting.
Design:
Mixed methods, involving boys and teachers to provide a qualitative account of how these boys came to be interested in math and science, and providing a quantitative evaluation of the impact of the curriculum.
Results:
Of the 84 boys who participated in the project, 43 were interested in mathematics and biology, including six who took a natural sciences course. One third of the 80-105 boys surveyed were interested in mathematics in sixth grade and two thirds in eighth grade. Boys who were the only child of a parent with a college education were more likely to be interested in a natural sciences course. Teachers surveyed reported that the majority of boys were not interested in math or science in sixth grade and that the program improved boys’ interest in these subjects in eighth grade.
Conclusion:
The results suggest that middle school boys are interested in science and math, but not in the same way as their female peers.
The study suggests that providing challenging content and challenging pedagogy can increase interest in math and science. In the current study, interest in math was the highest in seventh grade and natural science the highest in eighth grade.
I think we should take a look at the whole scope of the problem. I think most of our math and science problems are based off of mathematics problems taken from advanced college level. We are not teaching students how to think strategically about how to achieve a goal, which is the hallmark of higher level mathematics. We are teaching our students how to memorize formulas and memorize the rules of addition and subtraction.
