Other than AutoCAD, Adobe Illustrator was the only other mainstream tool which had support for vector graphics before AutoCAD. It is primarily for desktop use and does not have the advantages of ease-of-use and cross-platform integration that AutoCAD offers.
Licensing
AutoCAD has an open source license and AutoCAD 2011 is free for download. There are license models available, starting from the basic AutoCAD for Windows and AutoCAD for Mac and AutoCAD LT. These licenses allow commercial use of AutoCAD software and include technical support and upgrades.
Adobe continues to sell upgraded versions of AutoCAD, referred to as “essentials”, which are intended for small and medium-sized businesses (SMB).
Compatibility
The latest AutoCAD release is compatible with Windows XP and Windows Vista. It is not compatible with Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 10.
